You can’t avoid crying at the altar, but you can keep your hair and makeup in place all night long with expert advice from professional hair stylists and makeup artist.

Wedding season is fast approaching and it’s safe to say planning your big day brings with it new levels of stress and an endless list of to-dos. So we’re bringing you a bridal beauty breakdown to get you prepped and ready. From on-the-day tricks, to treatments and expert advice we’ve got you covered.

Whether you choose to do your own wedding hair and makeup, or leave it up to the professionals you’ll still need a big day bridal beauty arsenal – a bag of tricks packed with products to hide post-ceremony mascara spills, tweak champagne toast and kissed lipstick smudges and spritz some bounce back into strands when you literally let your hair down. We asked a handful of Australia’s leading hair and makeup experts for the top three things they’d pack in their kit. Here’s what they had to say…

Max May, hair and makeup artist and Nude by Nature Makeup Ambassador

“Gloss, blush and powder are my top three go-to’s. Time is always of the essence on a wedding day, so I look for products that give me maximum results in minimum time. Nude by Nature Moisture Infusion Lipgloss ($21.95, at Nude by Nature) is perfect for layering over your favourite lip liner or lippy but can also be used on their own to give your lips the ultimate boost in three-dimensional shine with a bonus pop of colour.

Powder is the key to keeping skin looking flawless in person and in pictures. I love using pressed foundation to blot out any unwanted shine throughout the day and to keep foundation in place for the ultimate flawless skin finish.

The last product that is hot in my kit when I’m doing weddings is blush. You want to keep your skin looking as fresh and vibrant as possible. Blush is going to give you that lift in the skin and eyes as soon as you start to look a little flat or tired.”

Bareminerals Gen Nude Powder Blush ($37, at Mecca)

Paloma Garcia, hair stylist and owner of Paloma salon

“Hair on your wedding day needs to be shiny and luxurious so make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type in the lead up. Washing it the night before is also ideal as your style will hold longer – particularly an up do or if you’re adding natural texture or waves. Olaplex Shampoo and Conditioner ($74.95, at Look Fantastic) has the best range to help hydrate and strengthen in the lead up to the big day and beyond.

Texturising spray adds volume and grit. Use a big can during prep, then take pack travel size for on the day to refresh hair throughout the night and when you’re hitting the dance floor. Hairspray is an essential to make your hairstyle stay in place for photos, dancing and long into the night.”

Oribe Superfine Hair Spray ($54, at David Jones)

Hilary Holmes, makeup artist

“There’s a lot of things I can protect my clients with in terms of their makeup longevity but I always recommend a translucent powder. This ensures you can do quick, easy touch ups between ceremony and reception or before photos and the translucent tone means the whole bridal party can use it, regardless of skin tone (even the boys!). I use RCMA Translucent Powder ($30, at Hilary Holmes).

You’ll be kissing a lot of people and don’t forget the yummy food and drink you’ll be consuming! So I always ensure the bride and her bridesmaids have a lip colour to touch up with. I love a healthy, luscious lip so go for a gloss that has the pigment of a lipstick.

A lot of Australian women love the idea of not wearing powders on their skin as they feel it makes them look older and heavier in makeup, so while I do always use a powder to set, I encourage those women to use a setting spray too. This ensures it resettles makeup on the skin, refreshing it and also creates great adhesion.”

Skindinavia Bridal Makeup Finishing Spray ($14, at Hilary Holmes)

Liz Kelsh, makeup artist and Max Factor ambassador

“Perfect glowing skin is the most important element of your makeup for your big day. Nail your foundation and it should stay perfect all day long. Max Factor Radiant Lift Foundation ($39.95, at Target) is the perfect base for your wedding makeup. It has buildable properties so skin looks flawless and hyaluronic acid to keep the glow. It also has SPF 30 so it’s perfect for outdoor or beach weddings. Most importantly I love this foundation for weddings as it stays put, so you know your skin will look perfect all day with minimal touch ups required!

Adding a hint of blush is the perfect pick me up for you wedding day makeup and a cream formulas is super blendable. Apply with your fingers to the apples of the cheeks to brighten eyes and bring your makeup back to life. Then, I always keep some blotting sheets rather than powder in my bag [to sop up any oil or unwanted sweat and shine].”

Tatcha Aburatorigami Blotting Papers ($18, at Mecca)
