Velvet nails are 2020’s festive season manicure trend

According to two leading nail artists, Belinda Goldstein and Amy Le, velvet nails are the adult glitter manicure trend perfect for party season. Here’s how to get the look.

After giving our shellac-tortured nails a break during lockdown, taking to the clean beauty manicure and focusing on a diet rich in nail-strengthening goodness, we’re about ready to jump back on the cute mani bandwagon, just in time for party season.

If you’re not matching your mani to your makeup, try velvet nails instead. Taking it’s inspirational cue from velvet itself, the shimmery finish is like the adults version of glitter.

Leading the trend are two Los Angeles based nail artists (and Instagram must-follows), Betina Goldstein and Amy Le. The holographic finish on this shimmery-gel polish makes nails look like the real texture of velvet.

If you’re handy at doing your nails yourself, Goldstein achieved the look with magnetic gel polish from K-Beauty nail brand Think of Nail. Or for the full tutorial, Le offers a video how-to including which polish she uses. Otherwise, leave it to the professionals.

Otherwise, the next best thing is a shimmery polish. We like Butter London Glazen Peel Off Glitter Lacquer, $20 at Adore Beauty, Smith & Cult in Palace In Wonderland, $32 at Adore Beauty and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Strobe Light, $3.99 at Chemist Warehouse.
