A complete guide to getting a natural-looking fake tan with Steph Claire Smith

Steph Claire Smith knows a thing or two about at-home tanning. Here, she tells us the exact steps and products to use to make it look like your own glow.

Steph Miller (nee Claire Smith) yep, she married her long-term love Josh Miller late last year looking every inch glowing and radiant, but what else would you expect from the woman who is Bondi Sands’ ambassador?

We’ve always been envious of how she gets her tan so natural looking, so we went straight to the source to get all of her tanning tricks and tips to make giving up your Thursday night well worth it. And surprisingly getting an even glow is easier than it seems.

Pick your poison

“Start by finding a colour that suits your natural base skin tone, then choose a formula you like – foam, lotion or sprays,” says Miller.

Green suits most skin tones as it corrects pink pigments, violet works best for those with warm undertones and olive skin, black or ash bases are for those with deeper complexions and caramel bases are great for lighter skin.

Put in the prep work

“Exfoliate and shave 24 hours before you tan. When applying always use a mit for streak-free application and don’t rush! Make sure you’re slowly getting every spot and not missing any areas,” she says.

“Then moisturise your dry spots like your elbows and knees so that the tan doesn’t grab too much in those areas.”

Bangn Body Smooth Skin Scrub ($42, at Bangn Body)

Le Tan Self Tan Mit ($10, at Woolworths)

Make it last

“Moisturising is the key to keeping your tan long lasting,” she says.

“Honestly, the patchiness all comes down to how dry your skin might have been prior to putting the tan on, but also how moisturised you keep your skin post-tan. I love using everyday gradual tanning moisturiser on top of tan to continue to build colour whilst also keeping hydrated. Then, when you’re ready to remove it use a body scrub or flannel.”
