5 ways to sculpt, lift and tone your skin with face yoga

Our expert Emiko Terui is a massage therapist and face yoga advocate, here she demonstrates the best face yoga moves for a smoother, brighter and healthier-looking complexion.

We’ve all become a little skincare-obsessed of late. From creating our own cleansers and masks in the kitchen sink (yes, we literally did that), to trying almost every at-home tool and technique we can get our hands on: dermaplaning (the one where you shave your face) and dermarolling (the one where you roll tiny needles over your face) are both included.

But between many of us losing our jobs, or just needing to take a break from spending as we learn to deal with the financial repercussions of coronavirus, it’s hard to stay on top of a salon-worthy skincare routine when it costs so much.

If only there was a free solution that required no tools, costly products or expensive treatments. Wait, there is and it’s face yoga. An ancient technique used to tone and tighten the facial muscles, these moves can help rebuild volume loss, smooth lines and wrinkles and even lift sagging skin and all it requires is your fingers and a face oil.

Emiko Terui, remedial massage therapist at Sydney wellness studio MO+ and face yoga advocate, runs us through five of the best youth-boosting exercises that you don’t need to leave the lounge for. Watch the video for the full demonstration and to follow on.

If you don’t have an oil…

You don’t have to pair these moves with a nourishing elixir rich in fatty acids, but it will supercharge the experience and the results. A facial oil provides a bit of slip between your skin and packs a hydrating, brightening and skin-regenerating punch. We like:

Pomm Oil ($59, at Pomm)
Australia’s first cold-pressed Pomifera oil made from the seeds of the Hedge apple. It’s rich in omega 6 fatty acids and antioxidants for healthy, protected skin.

The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil ($12.90, at Adore Beauty)
The fatty acids in this bargain are made up of oleic and linoleic acids and help to hydrate skin and reduce barrier damage that can lead to flaking and dehydration.

Jurlique Purely Age-Defying Firming Face Oil ($69, at Adore Beauty)
Filled with a potent mixture of plant oils and botanical extracts, a little goes a long way. This drop is also rich in essential fatty acids and rock samphire extract (AKA the retinol of the sea).
